Madrid, Spain
Built by Pedro de Ribera 1717-30 to accommodate the Regiment of the Royal Guard, this building of gigantic proportions (its facade is 250 yards long) was used as a military academy and an astronomical observatory in the 19th century. A fire damaged the upper floors in 1869, and after some decay it was partially renovated and turned into a cultural and arts center (this is the north patio and the very impressive main plaza, which highly contrasts with the southern edge, still in dire straits). The center features temporary art exhibitions in different spaces, including the sala de bóvedas (Hall of the Vaults), right across from the big courtyard, and public and historical libraries. In summer outdoor concerts are held in the main plaza. OPEN: Tues.-Sat. 10-9, Sun. 11-2:30 exhibitions only.
