Latino Retro: Why Do We Hide Our Love For Salsa?

I must confess that I am not a big Salsa music fan but I am absolutely in love with some salsa songs.

Salsa is one of those genres that you like in private but sort of hide when your friends are talking about music tastes. I really don't know why since knowing how to dance Salsa has landed me the greatest dates in my life. I guess all is needed is just one person accepting they like Salsa and then all the closeted fans start coming out.

That's exactly what happened to me the other day when I was talking to one of my colleagues about great oldies and we both started singing 'Me Tengo Que Ir' by Venezuelan group Los Adolescentes.

A few weeks back my boss went to the Latin Billboards and after I confessed liking Celia Cruz's 'Quitate De Ahi', she told me her favorite moment at the event was when Marc Anthony got up from his seat and started dancing to Gilberto Santa Rosa's medley. We then went into this long conversation about today's best Salsero and we all agreed on Marc.

So why all the secrecy when it comes to loving Salsa? Does this happen to anyone else and who is your favorite Salsa singer?

Here's my Top 5 Salsa songs:

1. Marc Anthony - 'Hasta Que Te Conocí'

2. Los Adolescentes - 'Me Tengo Que Ir'

3. Celia Cruz - 'Quitate De Ahí'

4. Willie Colon - 'El Gran Varon'

5. Frankie Negron - 'Angel'
