Maria Salas is one busy woman, and happily so. Considered by many to be the 'Barbara Walters' of Latin America, South Florida's CW-live Morning News Movie Critic & Entertainment Reporter has a daily routine that others would find insurmountable, but she gets a thrill just thinking about it.
When she's not busy on air doing her movie reviews and interviewing celebrities, she writes for Aventura magazine and collaborates on Azteca America/T.V. Martí and channel 41 (America TeVe) as their film critic and co-host of various shows. Previously, Maria co-hosted South Florida Today on NBC 6-WTVJ and Telemundo Network. She now joins Terra.com as a film expert hosting the weekly online show "Movies with Maria."'I'm passionate about filmmaking ... I go to at least five to 10 movie set visits. I don't only review movies, but I get to be a part of the whole experience.'
This love for television and film was instilled early on by her parents when she was a child in Puerto Rico. 'I would see my dad going to Telemundo and doing his legal segment on the newscast. I would see him on different stations talk (as a) political analyst.'
By age 20, Salas had her own show, which was the start
of a career that would find her mentoring students and
being a trailblazer.
'I'm the first Latina movie critic on television in the
United States and the first Latina on television to be part
of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. And I'm very
proud. For me, that means so much.'
The newly single Salas routinely finds herself in heady company, but won't allow any sense of ego.
'The toughest thing is to be real. To be real to yourself (and) to be real to your audience.' If you could have overheard a specific conversation between any two people, which would it be? Mother Teresa and God. And to know Gandhi's thoughts? How can we be a little bit like that if we all had a little bit of Mother Teresa or Gandhi in us? It would be a better world.
If you had to name the one most important ingredient of human beauty, what would you say it is? Happiness. To be happy. You can then reflect that to the rest of the world.
If you could have one thing made out of pure gold, what would you choose? Gold wings. I could explore the universe and never fall. Because gold doesn't break.
To go anywhere in the universe and see new people, new civilizations and new cultures. And fly away!
